Not much else needs to be said. Have you decided where you’ll be when the most watched sporting event of the year goes down in history?

It’s a party every year at Melrose, and with all three levels of our bar open, there’s room for you too! As if $3.50 drink specials and $6.00 Chili Dog Pizza isn’t enough, it’s not a Melrose party without giveaways! This year we’ve got a few Official NFL jerseys up for grabs, as well as a couple of Bud Light Lounge Chairs – complete with coolers in the footstools, how cool is that?!

So I’m the girl – ahem, let me rephrase – I’m the Canadian that doesn’t much follow American football (need I mention I’m a Saskatchewan Canadian), but just for kicks, I chose to follow a team at random from the start of the season. And that team just happened to be the San Francisco 49ers. Superbowl might just be that much more interesting this year! Hope to see you here:)

Saturday October 8th was the Flames home opener in Calgary. I had my red socks and my flames gear on and the whole bar was abuzz with excitement. Devoted fans were eagerly waiting for the puck to drop after a long summer without hockey.

One of my first tables was two nice young fellows named Dave and Drew. They were proudly wearing their Pittsburgh jerseys and looked ready for a night of hockey. I asked them if I could see their ID’s and discovered that they were both from the US. I offered them the drink special and they happily ordered a bucket of ice cold Canadians. When I suggested that they enter the draw for future flames tickets they said they probably wouldn’t be in town long enough to claim their prize. I joked that their charming waitress would gladly accept the tickets in their place, and that they should enter anyway as we often give away fun mini prizes throughout the evening. Dave and Drew concluded that if they won I could have the tickets in exchange for my awesome hockey socks, which we agreed would be fair exchange.

As it turns out, Dave and Drew were going to the game that night and wouldn’t be there to claim their prize either way. As I got to know them I realized just how dedicated they were to their team.

Dave and Drew weren’t just in Calgary to watch their team that day, they were here as part of their North American hockey tour. Drew had flown from Florida to Pittsburg (his home town) to meet up with Dave. From there they flew to Vancouver to watch the Penguins take the Canucks 4-3 in their first official game of the season. The pair then flew to Calgary to watch the October eighth game against our Calgary Flames, and had plans to drive to Edmonton the next day to watch their team take on the Edmonton Oilers.

Before they left I made sure they got some noise makers to take to the stadium and a gift certificate to come back after the game and celebrate. Even if their team didn’t win that night they were certainly rock stars in my book, and deserved a little celebrity treatment. I got them a couple of ‘rock star ‘shots as my final farewell and sent them off to the Dome. These two were a real pleasure to serve and I’m glad they made the Heart of the Red Mile one of the stops on their awesome Canadian Hockey tour. Wishing you all the best from the frosty north!

Or this year, in the case that the 31st falls on a Monday…HALLOWEEKEND!!

Melrose has not one but TWO big events planned for the last weekend of October.

Friday the 28th is our Pumpkin Carving Contest & Slumber Party! (Since we are celebrating Halloween the next day, we thought why don’t we all kick back in our pajamas, carve some pumpkins for charity, relax & watch the Flames game & maybe some horror movies, then dance up a storm, slumber party style!) Proceeds for our #Carve4Kids go to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Calgary & Area. For more info or to sign up your team, please visit www.melrosehalloween.eventbrite.com

Saturday the 29th – pajamas off, costumes on!! Okay, we’re all a little sad that GSP got injured and will no longer be fighting, but UFC will still go on, free cover of course, and our Halloween party can now blast off in full force whenever y’all decide to show up! Did I mention $100 prizes for the BEST costumes in the house? So, yeah…bring it!

As excited as I am to throw on my costume on the Saturday, I think I’m just a tad more over the moon about wearing my pajamas in the bar the night before! I haven’t worn pajamas in public since college finals!

See you on Halloweekend, YYC!
