The Magic of Christmas donation drive campaign returns!

Melrose is back and partnering with the Magic of Christmas charity for our 5th annual Magic of Christmas donation drive campaign. Beginning November 15th until December 20th we will be encouraging Calgarians to help us raise toy donations for the local Charity The Magic of Christmas!

Just like years past, we are asking for donations appropriate for teens and tweens between the ages of 12 – 17. Those of you that do donate to the toy drive we will receive a ballot to enter into the Giving Tree contest. On December 17th we will draw 30 spots for the Giving Tree dinner and drawdown event. This will be held on December 20th, each winner will be invited to bring a guest and be treated to a full Christmas dinner before their chance to choose a prize from the giving tree.

What is the drawdown event?

All 30 names of the winners will be placed in a ballot box and pulled one by one. As each name is taken out of the box they are eliminated from the grand prize – but they still choose an item from the giving tree. The final 3 names drawn will win a chance at our grand prize!

You can drop your donations off at Melrose inside cowboys – 421 12th Ave SE Calgary, AB T2G 1A5 – Monday to Friday between November 15 until December 20th. We hope you will join us at Melrose on December 17th for our final toy drive event!

Lest We Forget – Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day , on the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month, we take a moment to observe and remember all those men and women who have fought and served and to remember all those who continue to serve and defend us during times of war, conflict and peace.

For a lot of Calgarians, this day offers us time off from work which we may use to catch up on personal errands that have fallen to the wayside due to our busy lives. However, with so many ways to reflect on those that have sacrificed so much for our freedom, we hope you’ll consider taking in the many ways to honour our fallen with the various Remembrance Day services happening around our city.

Time for Another Calgary Flames Season!

It’s the most exciting time of year for most Canadians, hockey season! And it all kicks off for your Calgary Flames tonight!

With excitement at a fever pitch for another year of Flames hockey, it’s only natural to take a look at the changes the team made and what their chances are for the new season. The biggest news that has probably kept most Flames fans on the edge of their seats was the will he-won’t he drama that surrounded Johnny Gaudreau. In case you didn’t hear, he did. Meaning you can relax and look forward to another 6 years of “Johnny Hockey” in the dome. Both sides came to an agreement on Thanksgiving Day that had Flames fans letting out a collective sigh of relief and at the same time recharges their hopes for a successful year.

Starting with the backend

lead by their Captain and Norris caliber defensemen Mark Giordano, the Captain is supported by his partner in crime TJ Brodie and defensive stud Dougie Hamilton who after a year in the Calgary system seems ready to take the next step. Another defenseman to keep an eye on is the young Jokipakka, fresh off his stint with the Finnish National Team at the World Cup.

With the Defense looking strong we’ll turn our attention to the forwards.

As side from Gaudreau, there’s centre Sean Monahan who is also locked up for the next 6 years. Sophomore Sam Bennett will look to take the next step in his promising NHL career. We can’t forget to mention the newest Flames to take to the ice, Matthew Tkachuk. Having passed what many feels was his first test as a rookie on October 5th when the 6th overall draft pick was met with a standing ovation thanks to his game-winning goal in a shootout against the Arizona Coyotes. One of the standout players in camp and someone to watch tonight and hopefully the entire season, Tkachuk is determined to stay with the team for the long haul.

Arguably the biggest change comes between the pipes.

Gone are Hiller, Ramo, and Ortio who combined for a league low save percentage of 0.892. In their place is the duo of Brian Elliot and Chad Johnson. They should provide a much needed steady presence for the team and allow the players to focus forward to putting the puck in the other net.

Speaking of looking forward to, we also want to mention to all Flames fans to stay tuned to all of our social media accounts in the coming weeks and months, as we have a Battle of Alberta trip to giveaway to one lucky fan for the Saturday, January 14th, 2017 match against the Edmonton Oilers! So be sure to keep an eye out for that and stop by to join us at Cowboys Casino from every Calgary Flames games whether home or away!

Celebrate Valentine’s Day in Calgary!

Its Valentine’s Day weekend, and great news lovebirds, it falls on a Saturday this year which gives you and your significant other an entire day to celebrate your love!

But if you’re still unsure as to how to show your affection or stuck on what to do, don’t fret! We’ve compiled a list of great events and happenings in and around Calgary this weekend for both couples and singles alike.

For Couples

If you’re looking for something simple that only costs you time, why not enjoy the day at the Calgary Farmer’s Market for That’s Amore’!

Starting at 10am and going until 4pm, you’ll enjoy live music, performances, vendor specials and much more!

Don’t want to spend your day shopping? Then you can try another free event, by enjoying a Skate in Nature down at Prince’s Island Park.

Then you can warm up with some hot chocolate at the 2015 YYC Hot Chocolate Fest as participating cafes and restaurants create some unique cups of coco, with proceeds going to help Meal on Wheels!

But if you’re looking to take in the nightlife, we think nothing is better for date night than dancing it away with a loved one. That’s why we suggest you take in a class with the Arthur Murray Dance Centre where you can learn the basics like 2 step, tango and salsa.

And if you’re still feeling adventurous, why not end the night by enjoying time with your loved one under the stars. It might be a bit of a drive, but the Rothney Astrophysical Observatory is holding a Mythology in the Night Sky Open House where they will not only view the heavens, but also discuss Greek heroes and goddesses, like Cupid and Venus, and it’s only $20 per car or $10 per person to take in the wonder of the night sky.

For Singles

But of course, Valentine’s Day isn’t just for those already in love, but for those still looking for love, that’s why this next list of events has the single person in mind when it comes to having a great time this weekend.

If you’re looking for Mr. or Mrs. Right, one way to get out there is to enjoy a Singles event, and the Aloft University Calgary has one you just might enjoy.

$25 online, $35 at the door will get you in to enjoy some beer, cocktails and appetizers, with dancing going late into the night.

But if you would rather enjoy a meet and greet while shredding the snow, gather a few other single friends and head out to Banff and enjoy the mountains at Norquay for their Lifts of Love for just $25!

If you’re not looking for your significant other just yet and you want to enjoy things a little closer to home, and maybe even get your inner slob on, why not celebrate the day with Randy and Mr. Lahey of the Trailer Park Boys!

This Saturday, the Gateway Bar located on SAIT campus is hosting the 2 for A Valentine’s to Forget and it’ll only cost you $10!

But if your idea of debauchery involves a little more skin, then perhaps you’d enjoy the stylings of the Rhinestone Affair burlesque troupe at their 4th Annual Cinnamon Heartbreak Cabaret!

It’s just an easy $22 to enjoy a sexy evening of fun and raucousness.

Looking to cut loose? Then spend your night dancing to the beats of DJ Deemaks in Kensington at a Valentine’s Day Singles Party!

Admission is free.

Now, if what you really wanted was something simple, then there are, of course, 2 final options that work great for both couples and singles, and that is to take in a great game of Hockey!

Because even though it is Valentine’s Day this weekend, it’s also the beginning of the Chinese New Year, and that’s why you can join the Calgary Hitman on Friday night for just $11 as they celebrate the Year of the Sheep at their annual Lunar Celebration!

But if you can’t make it Friday, you can still cheer on the home team when the Calgary Flames take on the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday night for what is sure to be a great battle.

Can’t get tickets? Then you’re always welcome to join us in our lounge at Cowboys Casino for a pint and a good meal as you take in the action because the most important thing about this holiday is spending time with those you love, whether that’s a partner, a good friend or even just good family.

Cheers and we hope you have a great Valentine’s Day weekend!
