Time for Another Calgary Flames Season!

It’s the most exciting time of year for most Canadians, hockey season! And it all kicks off for your Calgary Flames tonight!

With excitement at a fever pitch for another year of Flames hockey, it’s only natural to take a look at the changes the team made and what their chances are for the new season. The biggest news that has probably kept most Flames fans on the edge of their seats was the will he-won’t he drama that surrounded Johnny Gaudreau. In case you didn’t hear, he did. Meaning you can relax and look forward to another 6 years of “Johnny Hockey” in the dome. Both sides came to an agreement on Thanksgiving Day that had Flames fans letting out a collective sigh of relief and at the same time recharges their hopes for a successful year.

Starting with the backend

lead by their Captain and Norris caliber defensemen Mark Giordano, the Captain is supported by his partner in crime TJ Brodie and defensive stud Dougie Hamilton who after a year in the Calgary system seems ready to take the next step. Another defenseman to keep an eye on is the young Jokipakka, fresh off his stint with the Finnish National Team at the World Cup.

With the Defense looking strong we’ll turn our attention to the forwards.

As side from Gaudreau, there’s centre Sean Monahan who is also locked up for the next 6 years. Sophomore Sam Bennett will look to take the next step in his promising NHL career. We can’t forget to mention the newest Flames to take to the ice, Matthew Tkachuk. Having passed what many feels was his first test as a rookie on October 5th when the 6th overall draft pick was met with a standing ovation thanks to his game-winning goal in a shootout against the Arizona Coyotes. One of the standout players in camp and someone to watch tonight and hopefully the entire season, Tkachuk is determined to stay with the team for the long haul.

Arguably the biggest change comes between the pipes.

Gone are Hiller, Ramo, and Ortio who combined for a league low save percentage of 0.892. In their place is the duo of Brian Elliot and Chad Johnson. They should provide a much needed steady presence for the team and allow the players to focus forward to putting the puck in the other net.

Speaking of looking forward to, we also want to mention to all Flames fans to stay tuned to all of our social media accounts in the coming weeks and months, as we have a Battle of Alberta trip to giveaway to one lucky fan for the Saturday, January 14th, 2017 match against the Edmonton Oilers!
